The Blue Dot Jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti) is a colorful species of jawfish endemic to Mexico. It is renowned for its vibrant coloration and engaging personality.

Distribution and Habitat

Endemic to the Gulf of California, Mexico, found on sandy bottoms near rocky reefs at depths of 5-25 meters.

Physical Description

Reaches 10 cm, has a striking bright blue body covered with small blue dots, yellowish head, elongated body with large eyes, one of the most colorful jawfish species.

Diet and Feeding

Carnivorous, feeds on zooplankton and small benthic invertebrates in the wild, in captivity accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.

Behavior and Reproduction

Excavates burrows in sandy substrates where it spends most of its time, typically found in pairs or small colonies, males are mouthbrooders, known for its active and engaging personality in the aquarium.

Aquarium Care

Requires a tank of at least 30 gallons with a deep sand bed of 3-4 inches for burrowing, peaceful toward tankmates, provide a secure lid as they are known jumpers, one of the more expensive jawfish due to limited collection range.

Classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.
